A panel discussion on “The United Nations in Pakistan and its role as the Committed Partner in Promoting Technical Regional Cooperation through its Mandate” was organized by School of Politics and International Relations (SPIR), Quaid-e-Azam University Islamabad with the collaboration of United Nations Office on Drug & Crime (UNODC). The panelists included Dr. Zafar Nawaz Jaspal, Director SPIR, Naweed Riaz, International Law Enforcement Advisor, UNODC, Maj. Gen. Khawar Hanif, D.G Anti Narcotics Force, and Dr. Shahab Hashim, High Risk Groups Coordinator, UNICEF Director/Deputy Director, WHO.
The panelists hailed the role of UN in promoting peace throughout the world. However, the challenges faced by South Asian region were highlighted, which are yet to be mitigated. The speakers agreed to identify lasting solution of Afghanistan narcotic problem. Also, spill over effect of opium production in Afghanistan came under discussion and possible and appropriate responses to this menace were discussed too. It was elucidated that drugs are causing more deaths than terrorism throughout the globe and youth is more vulnerable to this disease than elder people, which requires prompt actions. The panelists also highlighted refugee’s crisis in the region and suggested joint, appropriate measures for border management.
The UNODC thanked Dr. Zafar Nawaz Jaspal for organizing such an insightful discussion on one of the burning issues this region is facing.
