Nonproliferation Webinars at School of Politics and International Relations

The Second Series of Webinars jointly conducted by School of Politics and International Relations and CRDF Global, Washington, United States concluded at the School with the last webinar held on June 5, 2015. These webinars were the part of long term academic collaboration between School of Politics & International Relations and CRDF Global. Dr Zafar Nawaz Jaspal, Director SPIR, moderated and chaired all the sessions. Mariia Berezina conducted the sessions from CRDF’s side.

Three Webinars were conducted in this series. First Webinar took place on May 13, 2015 when George Pekovich, Vice Preseident Carnegie Endowment from and Dr. Rifaat Hussain, Head of Department at NUST, spoke on the Deterrence and Stability. Dr. Perkovich gave an extensive presentation on challenges associated with nuclear disarmament and the implications of reductions to nuclear arsenals on deterrence and stability Dr. Hussain talked about Strategic stability in South Asia and specific South Asian challenges such as crisis stability, or assess reasons for optimism or pessimism about nuclear stability in the region. The presentations were followed by Question and Answers.

Second Webinar was held on May 28, 2015 when Dr. Zafar Nawaz Jaspal, Director School of Politics & IR and Geffrey Knopf Professor and Program Chair, Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies, Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey had a brief presentations on Nonproliferation. Jeffrey Knopf gave a presentation on trends shaping the nonproliferation regime and Dr. Jaspal explained the Pakistani perspective on trends shaping the nonproliferation regime. The presentations were followed by Question and Answers.

Third Webinar on Confidence Building Measures was held on June 5, 2015. Speakers included Michael Krepon, the co-founder of the Stimson Center and Dr. Zulfiqar Khan, Chairman Department of Defence & Strategic Studies, National Defence University Islamabad. Krepon discussed the role and impact of different confidence building measure, drawing on historical examples from the USSR, cross-strait relations, and elsewhere whereas Dr. Zulfiqar Khan made a brief analysis of the Nuclear Security Confidence Building Measures (CBMs): India-Pakistan.

All Webinars have been attended by PhD and M. Phil Scholars of School of Politics & IR and PhD scholars from National Defence University Islamabad. In addition, the faculty members and two visiting Chinese scholars participated in the Webinars.
